Solved - Dell Studio 1535 Keyboard Issues

When a keyboard misbehaves, it is maddening. My Studio 1535 keyboard has been getting worse and worse the last few days for no apparent reason. Basically, keys get stuck down or refused to work at all. I’m talkin’ bout many keys just not working right, over 10 of them. I figured it was too early for a replacement keyboard – I’ve replace Dell laptop keyboards before, but that was after 3 years of use, not 18 months.

Using the internet, I found a possible fix. It didn’t make any sense, but I needed to try something since it was impossible to type with the issue.

It worked. I’m typing as fast as ever now after taking the following steps.

The Fix

  1. Shutdown the machine
  2. Take the battery out
  3. Unplug the power
  4. Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds
  5. Plug in the power (no battery yet)
  6. Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds
  7. Put the battery back in
  8. Reboot normally

That’s it.

On other websites, it is said that static electricity builds up and that those steps remove it. My home has been dry this week, so I don’t completely think this is BS.

Firmware: A05

When I bought this laptop there were a number of issues with the multimedia button-bar that demanded a firmware upgrade. I checked today and there isn’t a new firmware available.
