Who is Invited?

  • YOU ARE!
  • Anyone from anywhere who wants to learn more about Linux and all the flavors of it. That includes Ubuntu, Fedora, CentOS?, RedHat? or any of the many other versions of Linux available.
  • ALE-NW events are not limited to SPSU students. Everyone is welcome.

What is an InstallFest??

Sometimes people new to Linux need a little help getting it installed on their computer. An InstallFest is where you bring your PC or Laptop and experts help you get Linux installed. We have many experts with lots of Linux and computer expertise attending this event. We will try to get you up and running as quickly as possible while not doing any damage to existing OSes.

Signup!

Please complete the computer information and signup form and email it as instructed. You will be contacted for a scheduled time to be at the room. Walk-in installs will be handled as available. Prior signup is best and will get priority help.

What To Bring?

  • Patience - for a new installation, about 2 hours is needed if everything goes well. More time will be needed if there are surprises.
  • The PC you want to load Linux onto. It should be pre-setup as shown below.
  • We will have standard monitors, keyboards and mice available, so if you have a desktop PC, just bring the "tower" and power cord and any video converters if your monitor isn't standard.
  • We may not have internet connections available, but SPSU students can use their wifi credentials. It would be a good idea to bring a network cable just in case.

Computer Prerequisites

For the best outcome, your PC needs to be ready for Linux. What does that entail?

  • To load Linux over your existing OS (wiping MS-Windows) means zero preparation is needed. We like to wipe.
  • For a dual boot setup where you can choose to boot MS-Windows or a version of Linux, the prerequisites are a little more involved:
    • Backup your system before coming to the installfest.
    • Defragment your Windows Partitions before the InstallFest? - search for "defrag" in Windows7
    • Ensure your system has at least 2 logical partitions available - about 11GB of storage, more storage is better.
  • For a virtualized setup where you will run Linux under a virtual machine in MS-Windows, the following is needed:
    • Storage to install VirtualBox? (or some other VM technology you are familiar with). About 100MB
    • Storage to access at least 1 Linux ISO file (about 1GB)
    • Storage to create a virtual-HDD to run Linux from. This storage can be 100MB or 10GB or more. 15GB is the recommended amount.
    • Fast enough CPU to support virtualization; a Core2Duo is about the minimum for a happy experience
    • RAM; at least 2GB RAM, but more is better.

Parking

Free parking is available in the campus parking garage on the west side of the campus. The "J" building is east from the parking garage about 500 meters. Just walk between the 2 long buildings to the "J" building.

Directions from I-75

  1. On I-75, take exit 263 towards Southern Polytechnic University in Marietta
  2. Head southwest on South Marietta Pkwy SE toward Franklin Rd SE 1.0 mi
  3. Turn left onto West Main Entrance SE 459 ft
  4. Take the 1st right onto N Hornet Dr 0.3 mi
  5. Follow Hornet Dr around to the west side of campus. Turn left into the parking garage.
  6. Park.
  7. Walk directly east from the parking garage between 2 buildings. The building directly in front with the full length glass doors is the "J" building. It is about 200 meters from the garage.

What is ALE-NW?

  • ALE is the Atlanta Linux Enthusiast - a LUG, Linux Users Group. A LUG is where people interest in Linux get together to learn more, help others and solve real-world problems with Linux.
  • ALE-NW is the Northwest Atlanta Area sub-LUG. The SPSU ACM chapter has worked with us to gain access to SPSU rooms and some equipment.
