Controlling Filenames in Windows7 Media Center Recorded TV 2

In Windows Media Center, 7MC, and probably earlier versions, you can change the filenames created for recorded TV shows to be something more useful. This may not be new information to you, but it was to me.

Sorry for delving off F/LOSS topics again.

Registry

The registry setting is in:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media Center\Service\Recording
Then add (or edit) the filenaming string setting. It didn’t exist in my 7MC setup.

  • %Ch – Channel Number
  • %Cn – Station Name
  • %T – Title of show
  • %Et – Episode Title / Subtitle
  • %Dt – Date and Time

I like: %T-Dt-%Et
That results in a filename something like this:

  • POV-2011_10_23_07_00_00-Promised Land.wtv”
  • “In the Heat of the Night-2011_10_18_12_45_39-The Last Round.wtv”
for shows without a subtitle or Episode Title, that part of the filename will be empty.

Why do I like that setting?

  • Dashes – these separators are easy to parse later instead of more underscores.
  • Title first – to keep series together in director listings.
  • Date/Time 2nd – to keep show recording order, since 7MC doesn’t support storing the episode number (105), this is the next best thing.
  • Subtitle – so that lookups in IMDB for the episode number are easier. It also lets duplicate recordings jump out. Some networks broadcast the same episode multiple times in the week. If you are a few seasons behind on watching a show, recording reruns AND new episodes will help you catch up, if so interested.

I really wish an episode number were available – sSSeEE or 508 – that would be nicer. Looking through the guide data stored with each WTV file, that doesn’t seem to be there. I know many TV shows have this data published in the schedule data – TiVo has it.

    Should that not be

    %T-%Dt-%Et

    then?

    @Nico – You are correct!
