Diving Commentators
I was catching up on the FINA World Diving Finals in Rome today and found the best video, without any breaks, in high def at Universal Sports. Every dive from every competitor in HD. No commercials. WOW.
Heck, I even had to install a new version of Adobe-Flash to view it. If was well worth the effort. The picture is beautiful compared to the TV version that shows only a few dives from a few competitors and is very blocky due to over compression of the video signal.
Except the commentary. Don’t get me wrong, the video is fantastic, but the British commentator was beyond useless. Statements like, “she appears to have missed the entry” and “the crowd seemed to enjoy that, but they aren’t doing the judging though” and “has she produced the big one?” and “just a little bit of a kink in the top of that.” Even Cynthia Potter’s commentary is 10x better than this guy’s and I dislike her commentary.
For people who haven’t dived, please know that outdoor diving is very different from indoor diving. The Sun is constantly changing which means the “spots” that divers look for are constantly moving. The water looks completely different in shade, sun, and when it is cloudly. I found bright sunlight very difficult to my competition diving. See, most divers practice indoors or in the morning when the Sun is low. You get used to the lighting of your home pool. Lighting is the most important difference between pools, IMHO. The boards were always identical. The water is always the same distance, though the color may change a little. Room lighting could change drastically, but bright sunlight is a HUGE difference.
Universal Sports is a digital channel on my cable system, but they compress the signal so much it is unwatchable. Too bad.
Came across this sample of when divers get lost on Youtube. Lots of bad wipe outs. Some of these brought back bad memories of my Indianapolis trip.
