Brazilian President Worried About Invasion?
In this BBC News Article, it is reported that the Brazilian President wants assurances from President Obama that the USA military in Columbia will not perform any other tasks than drug fighting in Columbia. A long contract with Ecuador ended last year and the USA negotiated for military placement in Columbia. There are less than 1,000 troops and 600 contractors located here.
President Chavez is hinting that an invasion is being planned. Not likely.
I can’t speak for our government, but here are the feelings of one individual.
- I have no reason to dislike any south American country other than Venezuela where I dislike the current leader and government takeover of private companies. The people I’ve meet appear very nice and they have the obligation to choose their leaders.
- I generally like all the other countries, including Brazil, Argentina, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Columbia.
- I cannot imagine the USA trying for anything militarily outside drug interdiction.
- I wonder why so much money is being spent trying to stop the supply rather than the demand for currently illegal drugs.
- Legalization of these drugs would allow taxation, bring the current local distributors into the light and add government oversight and regulation.
I’d love to visit most of the countries in the Americas (North, Central, and South) and truly enjoy meeting visitors in my town from those locations.
I’m also happy with legal immigration from any country in the world to my town, but oppose any illegal immigration vehemently.
Finally, I hate to say this, but the average person living in the USA doesn’t pay any attention to other countries unless it impacts
- their business or
- their vacation or
- their family.
Most USA citizens simply don’t have any contact or desire to follow foreign issues until it becomes a problem here. President Chavez of Venezuela has been in the headlines for saying some very hateful things towards our leaders, controlling broadcast stations inside his country and nationalizing private companies. Other news in South America doesn’t really show up here. Outside news isn’t that important to the vast majority of people living in the USA.
Invasion? Not likely.
