How to Reset Adito Passwords 3

Posted by JD 01/20/2010 at 04:53

The Adito administrator has control over whether users may change their passwords or not. In some situations, an administrator may decide to prevent password changes, so the user may not see that option at all.

If you can’t locate the password reset in the web interface, contact your VPN administrator and ask whether it is possible to change the password with your level of Adito VPN access. Otherwise, the password reset function isn’t hidden.

The Management Console and User Console interface has a menu on the left with these main choices. If you don’t see them all, you aren’t an administrator.

    • Configuration
    • Access Control
    • Resources
    • System

Just to clarify this a little more. An end user must have a personal right to Change Password as configured by the administrator.
This function is found in the Management Console under

    • Access Control
      • Access Rights
        • Change Password
Then the right must be given to either the user or a group that the user is a member of.

To reset the user’s password, visit the Management Console under

    • Access Control
      • Accounts
        • Select the account to edit, then there is a checkbox for Reset Password.

I don’t allow VPN users to change their passwords so they can’t make an insecure password. I set them and make the password 63 characters long. There’s little chance anyone will memorize it. I’ve provided each user with a KeePassX database and most have either started using it or migrated the URL, Account, and password into their preferred password manager.

For me, whenever I change anything in the Configuration section, I’m forced to follow the other instructions here to Fix the GUI config before it works again. Changes made anywhere else in the Console don’t seem to cause this issue.

I don’t recall exactly how to reset the Adito administrative password, but I’m fairly certain I had to do it during the early VPN trials. My memory is not clear, but I think it involved a MySQL command into the database and using ANT to rerun a portion of the setup. Normally, I’d retain a script used to perform that type of a task, but it appears whatever I did was very easy or clearly documented in the Administrator’s Guide and it worked. Sorry that I don’t have more details.

Adito SSL certs are only 1024 characters in length. Even the free SSL providers are requiring 2048 length keys now, so that basically, means you need to run an internal CA and force all your users to install it into their systems.

This probably isn’t a good idea. Time to switch to something else … perhaps OpenVPN.
