Top Old School UNIX Tools I Can't Live Without

Posted by JD 01/27/2010 at 09:58

  1. tcsh – the one true shell (bash is workable)
  2. ssh
  3. perl
  4. locate
  5. vim
  6. cron / at
  7. aliases – mainly to correct common misspellings
  8. egrep
  9. pushd/popd
  10. find
  11. man

I would add ts – Task Spooler, but I don’t know if it counts as “old school.” I’ve seen other lists with GUI tools in them like Nano and Enlightenment. Phoohy. Those aren’t old school. I did expect to see awk in those other lists, no some bloated editor or MS-Outlook-like bloated email client.

Most of these tools are used daily to perform more complex tasks. Having a computer do things automatically, at some time in the future or running 1 big job at a time is something most Windows users just don’t think about. Unix has been doing this for 20 years, quietly. Enjoy.
