Nice CPU Comparison Website
About once a year I need to compare laptop and desktop CPU performance. I find myself searching the normal PC hardware websites like
When these sites have current data, it is great, but they often compare very specific CPUs or CPUs under very specific non-real-world situations. Once they forced a group of CPUs to run at 2.8GHz regardless of the normal processor speeds for their comparisons. Contrived? Definitely not useful in the real world. That doesn’t take anything away their CPU round-up articles, which are very good.
Alternative http://www.cpubenchmark.net/
7/2011 Update – The guys over a Tekzilla made a comment about this benchmark website on 7/8/2011. I can’t summarize everything they discussed around GPU and CPU performance, but they warned against any benchmarks that compared artificial benchmarks created across very different hardware setups. That makes sense. I’ll probably stop using this alternative as my primary go-to site for information, rather, I’ll use it as a way to build a short list of CPUs or GPUs to perform more research with.
Ok, so here’s a site, http://www.cpubenchmark.net/ that keeps relative performance stats for laptop and desktop CPUs. Isn’t that really what you want? Even if their testing methods aren’t perfect, most of the time I’m looking for relative performance so I can determine which CPU in my price range would be best. It helps me know if spending $20 more will return a huge increase in performance.
The parent website also has graphic card performance comparisons too, which is really handy when you want to find the best card for $50, $100, $150 or more. A few weeks ago, I needed a new GPU and didn’t want to spend more than $60 – replacing an nVidia 7200GS. The GT 9800 looked like the best deal, until I saw that it used almost 100W of power. For a slightly lower performance rating was a new GT 440 – which also used almost 50% less power AND supported DirectX 11. Since I don’t use Windows, that isn’t critical to me, but in the future, this card may end up in a Windows machine. Anyway, if you aren’t a high end gamer, these GPU comparisons are probably close enough for our needs.
