Free Ubuntu Pocket Guide

You can download the Free PDF version of the Ubuntu Pocket Guide

I’m not real happy with PDF files, so I attempted to convert it into HTML. The conversion worked, but the results were unusable due to strange fonts and characters. Oh well.

I’ve been using Linux since 1993, but it doesn’t hurt to learn the GUI way to accomplish things. That’s where this pocket guide shines. It doesn’t show every way to accomplish a task, it shows the most common way.

It covers some non-trivial topics too. There are instructions on how to install proprietary video drivers AND connect a second monitor, which hasn’t always been easy under Linux. There’s also a section on automatically encrypted folders, which is nice.

My only complaint, and it isn’t much of a complaint, is that VMware Player is recommended over VirtualBox for those who want to run Ubuntu inside a virtual machine instead of the WUBI or dual-boot options.

It seems to cover all the things someone new to UNIX and Ubuntu would need to know in the first few weeks and months, but there won’t be anything too ground breaking for anyone with a yr or more of Ubuntu experience.
