Top 12 System Monitoring Tools

I came across another Top 12 List today. This one is about Live System Monitoring Tools# for Linux.

We use most of them almost daily.

Here’s the list from the article.

  • top
  • uptime
  • vmstat
  • free
  • ps
  • iostat
  • w
  • sar
  • mpstat
  • netstat
  • du
  • df

I’d add 1 more tool to the list

  • htop – especially for multicore/cpu systems

If you’d like to add graphics and historical charts, SysUsage is a nice addition. Often you aren’t watching when an issue happens, but with SysUsage capturing statistics all the time, you have the minute-by-minute information for the last year to help pinpoint a problem. We periodically rsync the graphs to a central system so the charts are still available regardless of the source system situation.
