Ubuntu 10.04 - Lucid - Lockup

Lucid locked up on me today. The external disk array was really busy running multiple transcoding jobs at the time – love the quad core CPUs!. Those jobs filled up /raid, not any important file systems and locked up X/Windows. HOME is on a different FS too, BTW.

I was able to ssh in from another machine.
sync, sync, sudo reboot
LOCKED. Nothing worked from that point on. BRS (Big Red Switch) required.

I don’t think EXT4 is ready for production use and it certainly shouldn’t be the default at installation time. I’m moving back to JFS ASAP. BTW, the array was running JFS, it was just /, /var with EXT4 and they both had/have over 4GB of available space.

Just to clarify, I’m running a fairly new install of the real released 10.04 Ubuntu x64 Server. No beta code and it wasn’t upgraded.

The only errors in syslog or messages were for the DVD drive, nothing related to and SATA disks. There were a few ERROR 4s Interrupted system call and 14s Bad address caught by the kernel. Seems libavcodec.so.52.20.1 and npviewer.bin and libc-2.11.1.so may have some issues to be resolved.
