I’m running VBox 3.1.6 OSE and have been testing it for stability the last week or so. Locking up a system doesn’t bode well for VirtualBox on a server. I reviewed the syslog and dmesgs – there is nothing unusual just before the initial general protection fault. It is actually 40 seconds earlier that SysUsage ran. SysUsage is my performance monitoring tool and runs every minute and it continued to run every minute after the initial errors.

Anyway, I had to remote into the system to get to a shell. From there I tried to `sync`, but that process locked up too. I tried again – locked up. Lastly, I remoted in and did a sudo reboot which appeared to work, but didn’t. Last I pushed the BRS – Big Red Switch since the system was completely unresponsive locally or from remote connections.
I’ve found references to similar bugs out there, but they are with much older kernels like 2.6.27-xx which claim to have been fixed. Perhaps it was a fluke?

Well, it happened again yesterday. It appears to be an interaction between VirtualBox and the nVidia graphics drivers. I run dual monitors and that has been stable for a few weeks, provided virtualbox was not running. I’ll try a few different experiements over the next few days to determine whether it is vbox or the graphics interaction of vbox with the nVidia drivers.
Time to start a VM with vboxheadless. Use
to get the list of available VMs. Use
to start the WinXP-Home VM without any GUI displayed. I’ll need to vnc in to access that VM, which is fine.
So I ran with WinXP in the headless mode for about 18 hours and everything was fine. On Saturday mornings, I perform system maintenance – which is mostly patches. Often there is no need to reboot, but with strange video artifacts in vlc and mplayer refusing to display any video, I figured a reboot was needed.
After the reboot, I started the VM (WinXP) using the vbox GUI. I run a video editor … VideoRedoPlus in the VM and it has always had less than perfect audio start/stop behaviors. Today, that seems fixed – perfect inside the VM. This VM is fast, very fast. Video playback performance is excellent and the normal work that we all do on a Windows machine feels fast too.
I need to migrate my Quicken install from another VM into this one after I try to get it working under WINE and fail. The other VM is running WinXP-Pro on a Win7 Ultimate host. Sadly, it has gotten EXTREMELY slow recently. The host OS is slow too.
I suppose I should post a systems diagram for my home/office setups to help keep discussions clear. WHen you have over 10 VMs running across 4 physical systems, things can get confusing.
So far, so good after the latest kernel updates. The VM running WinXP in a GUI (not headless) has not crashed and it has been running non-stop for over 2 days. I’ve installed complex software and run it inside the VM too. No issues experienced.
Perhaps with another week of no issues, I’ll consider vbox stable enough for server use and further testing with 8+ VMs on a single system.
