Firefox - Huge Memory Hog 4

Posted by JD 03/04/2011 at 12:00

I use Firefox with just a few extensions. Seven (7) are enabled right now. I have 3 tabs open, including the window I’m typing this article into.

So, why is Firefox using almost 1GB of RAM on my system?

PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND
30488 userid 20 0 973m 673m 26m S 9 33.5 445:22.42 firefox-bin

Seriously, I’d like to know. What could Firefox v3.6.13 be doing that needs more than 100MB of RAM? I see this happening almost every week.

What sort of memory use do you see with Firefox?

So I shutdown Firefox and restarted it with the same 3 tabs open.

PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND
    14706 userid 20 0 314m 119m 26m S 2 5.9 0:10.51 firefox-bin

Can someone at Mozilla please run Purify and fix the memory leaks? Memory leaks are bugs too, BTW.

I bought a new machine with additional RAM, ever since I upgraded to Firefox 4, this machine runs just like my old one – memory too high, swapping very active, things slow.

Your numbers to not impress me.
I just noticed that FireFox 4 had gobbled up 1.5 gigabytes of my memory…
Restarted it with the same frames, and it started at 0.5 gigabytes.

Yes, I’m running with 10+ tabs open, but seriously…

And this is without counting the plugin container.

Firefox 6.0.2 still has this memory hog issue.
Can someone at Mozilla please, please, please run Purify? Please?
