Seems he preferred to be savior, not worker. This meant that he needed to break things so he could fix them when everyone else was watching and waiting.
If your IT department is 1 person or a few people, you are in danger. Companies need a team and need to ensure that 1 member of the team doesn’t know everything while the others know next to nothing. If the company can only afford 1 person, be certain to bring in outside IT consultants from time to time. The extra $2K/yr or so is good insurance.
It might be useful to switch those consultants out every few years to ensure they don’t become part of the IT guys network of failures.
