If wiretaps and intercepting snail-mail both require a court order in the USA, then why doesn’t listening in on internet communications also require a court order?

Because our elected leaders don’t care about thems Internets. They’re not nerds, after all!
From my perspective, technology has evolved, but the law has not. By doing so, they have allowed technology to enter our lives without the explicit constitutional protections we are accustomed to. By not keeping up with the pace of technology, they have backdoor access through negligent legislation.
